Psychology And Counseling Courses – Courses that Help You Help PeopleUnderstand Themselves

There will never be a more complex and hard to comprehend being in the universe than a human person.  Books written about this subject can fill a countless number of libraries and still, they wouldn’t provide a complete knowledgebase of troubleshooting procedures when it comes to fixing the human psyche.  What we have is an incomplete jumble of ideas about human beings and it would take another millennia perhaps to gain a semblance of order in the data that we have about human relationships, behavior and system of beliefs.  Psychology and counseling are just two of our best efforts to try and understand how human beings relate to each other, behave towards others, and seek the right solution to everyday problems.  We have established schools of thought that try to provide answers to the human condition and thus we have learning institutions that offer psychology and counseling courses to help people understand other people and make this world a better place.
We often read of psychology and counseling as two areas complementing each other. However, it is essential to know that there are differences between these two and knowing them can help us determine exactly what it is that we want to do later with the knowledge that we gain in studying it. Most people want to take up psychology and counseling courses because they want to help people but being a psychologist and a counselor are two different careers, and although they may share a common background, the study of each of them leads to a different field of expertise.
Psychologists treat and continue to support people who need them.  Students of psychology go through a long and structured program of study and training in this area and continue through 3 to 5 years of practice and experience.  If they want to advance in their career, they must go through a minimum of 1 year studies for a Master’s degree; and 3 more years for a doctorate degree. They study human behavior and how the human mind functions, seeking to explain why people behave in a certain manner, what they feel and think in different situations where they find themselves in. The results of these studies are used in the treatment of mental health problems, and applied to resolving issues of human performance and self-help.
Just as the human mind is complex, psychology has many areas of expertise that try to bring order and understanding to it.  Thus, there is clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, evolutionary psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, social psychology, occupational psychology, abnormal psychology, child psychology and neuropsychology, sports psychology, community psychology, experimental psychology, and developmental psychology. Most people come to know a person engaged in this discipline as a clinical psychologist who tries to help those people with mental health issues.
A counselor on the other hand is one who encourages people to look at their own life, problems and personal feelings, explore them and thus gain understanding of their own selves. Counselors don’t provide advice nor make judgments of people who seek their help, and do not let their own attitudes, beliefs and feelings get in the way of helping people get back on their feet.  Counseling can help another person in developing a clearer understanding of his or her concerns regarding personal issues.  Counseling can help a person alleviate anxiety, deal with depression, and manage anger.  As a trained counselor, you will have the ability to offer your client a different perspective that can help them think of the right solutions to their problems.  You are also bound to treat as confidential all the information you may have about your client. The studies that you will have will enable you to use different approaches in counseling. You can emphasize behavior, thought process, or emotional aspects of your client.  Whatever approach you use, your overall goal is to help them see their own person at a better light and increase their sense of well-being.
